Topic: Ecosystem genomics and old herbarium mushrooms: implications on the ecology and evolution of fungi

Abstract:
In my research, I am using the fungus Stropharia rugoso-annulata as a model organism to understand and quantify changes on gene abundances of enzymes involved in inorganic nitrogen uptake and organic matter decomposition. I am using a combined approach of whole-genome sequencing of fresh mushrooms coupled with qPCR of 80-year-old mushroom herbarium specimen. This work has important implications on the ecology and evolution of fungi in response to selection forces as this novel pipeline allows for the study of mushroom herbarium specimens from an ecological perspective with evolutionary implications.
