Accessions record books:

Most of the below are arranged chronologically and give the name of source of specimens, a very brief description and the number of specimens received

1. Sept. 9, 1892 - Dec. 24, 1903; in the same volume are records of specimens borrowed, Feb. 12, 1894 Nov. 22, 1918, and of duplicates sent out (gifts & exchanges) March 26, 1894 - Nov. 21, 1916

The current accession book, starting July 20, 1954, is kept in the basement receiving room. A slightly different format is used, and the following information is recorded: date, accession number, description, whether exchange, gift or identification, quantity. The starting date of this accession book coincides with the incorporation of the bulk of the Arnold Arboretum herbarium into the Gray Herbarium.

Distribution records
6. Large record book listing specimens sent out March 13, 1886 - 1891; most of book is blank. [see 1892 - 1903 accession book for 1894 - 1916 records]

7. Collections added to the Gray Herbarium & Exchange sets distributed by the Gray Herbariu, ca. 1890-1930's: typed lists of who received sets, sometimes with sample labels pasted in; they were bound with an index and title page dated 1977

8. Exsiccatae distributions: numerical listing of who received Gray Herbarium exsiccatae, from Century 2 to Century 15; starts June, 1914, and appears to go to about 1953. In the archives are two volumes with Plantae Exsiccatae Grayanae labels pasted in. The first volume covers sets I - VII (730) [1902-1934], and the second volume covers sets VII (731) - XIV [1937-1945]. The first volume gives the following list of issue dates: I - Oct. 1902; II - June 1917; III - June 1917; IV - Jan. 1931; V - May 1935; VI - Mar. 1936; VII - June 1937; VIII - June 1938; IX - Mar. 1939; X - feb. 1940; XI - Mar. 1941; XII - Feb. 1942; XIII - June 1943; XIV - Oct. 1946

Book contains an assortment of notes including addresses of employees; Synoptical Flora notes (e.g., when page proofs received); notes on herbaria purchased; some notes on distributions; seeds and plants given to gardeners; Miss Clark's index corrections; Plantae Exsiccatae Grayanae; Contributions of Gray Herbarium; articles belonging to Gray Herbarium and articles loaned; oil and coal delivered to Gray Herbarium. Most of these notes are ca. 1890 - 1930, but the staff addresses go up to 1953.

Watson's handwriting; some kind of record of specimens which lists families, classification system under which family accepted, probably locations, arranged in ledger fashion; customs certificate for plants sent to Boston from St. Petersburg, 1859.
