Requesting Physical Specimens

  • Please read the Harvard University Herbaria Loan Policy and Procedures and Guidelines for Handling Loans (general HUH or FH) to make sure that you are able to comply with all listed conditions.
  • Send the request from the Curator or Director of the recognized herbarium to huh-requests@oeb.harvard.edu or by post to the Director. Please include:
    • The name and status of the researcher (student, staff member, visiting scientist, etc.)
    • A brief description of the nature and scope of the study
    • A list of taxa requested, with possible synonyms (include families or cryptogamic groups). If any taxa are listed in the CITES Appendices (link http://www.cites.org/eng/app/appendices.php) or the USDA Federal Noxious Weeds List (link http://plants.usda.gov/java/noxious?rptType=Federal) then documentation proving your institution may receive these specimens is required.
    • For any type specimen where an image is insufficient (link to page for requesting digital images of types) include the basionyms (including authors)
    • The geographic scope of specimens desired, if appropriate
  • Loans are made for a period of one year; if further time is required, an extension may be requested by the Curator/Director by emailing huh-requests@oeb.harvard.edu. Loans may not be transferred without written consent from the Harvard University Herbaria.
  • Upon arrival of the material please check all material; record any discrepancies or pertinent notes on the loan condition, and return the acknowledgement form to the Harvard University Herbaria.
